<center>Alvaro García de Zúñiga, 1 de Janeiro de 1958 - 23 de Abril de 2014</center>

Queridos amigos,

Teresa
A world war in radio days

A true (in)adaptation of one of the greatest classics of all time, for example of a personal “settling of accounts” (in the way of Hamlemachine by Heiner Muller), that incorporates a particular critical vision of the piece as well as transferring through other media a vision of what is not supposed to be seen: a spectacle of radio-theatre.

Imagine to what point that would have pleased MacLuhan.

-----------

Synopsis

At a ficticious Swiss broadcasting station the ensemble produces an opulent Othello radio play. If we close our eyes we can hear a virtually cinemascope-like "Othello," with storms, music, and sound effects. If we open our eyes, we recognize a deeply Othello-like intrigue involving the station's house ensemble - against the guest in the role of Othello, who is oblivious to the rules of the game and has no command of the language spoken in Switzerland.
It's a collision between different languages and customs, the materialism of the experienced ensemble and the helplessness of the stranger, disparate notions of the profession, the everyday and the production of art. And of course the final catastrophe does not confine itself to the play being broadcasted.

A new approach to chamber music, space music: its expression comes trueby associating a classical interpreter with a new generation of instrumentalists : those who play the modern instrument family mixers, flangers, phasing, and other sound processors (using sound producing, colouring and spacing to their full extend). The only Duet in the world working, (devoted to) this kind of music, Méta-duo works out withinits rigorous, magic and sensual electroacoustic world.
It experiences the sound alchemy of our time.
On the opposite of Showa Tennô HiroHito, OtihOrih delivers a radio broadcast that will transform his common mortal status into a divine one.

The play OtihOrih is a mix of acoustic art, music, poetry and theater. In one word, a non visual opera. That’s absolutely politically correct, isn’t it ?

<div class=direita>Alvaro García de Zúñiga</div>

-----

(At noon on August 15, 1945, the Emperor of Japan delivered the Imperial Surrender over the radio. Not only did this speech signify the end of World War II, but it meant the end of the Emperor’s status as a deity. This was the first time in history the people of Japan had ever heard their Emperor’s voice.)

“OtihOrih, on the opposite of Showa Tennô HiroHito, delivers a radio broadcast that transforms his common mortal status into a divine one.

- Oh! just like Orson Welles, you might think.

No. Not at all. Well, not really."

Like the Karl, Heinz, Pierre & Henry Stockhausen brothers, OtihOrih was interested in finding and developing the ultimate possibilities of creating new sounds. And like the Stockhausen brothers (worldwide known as the Fab Four), OtihOrih became more popular than Jesus.

To be able to work in all kind of experiences, much much more than the Jimmi Hendrix one’s, OtihOrih created the Unit 731, within which he performed some biological and human experiences on sound.

Arrested after some controversial issues, OtihOrih obtained total immunity in exchange of his files and data bases.”

The acoustic play OtihOrih mixes a complex and confused (hi)story in which theater, music and all kind of sounds interact together creating a non visual opera.

OtihOrih is the first mifplexcsound play on Earth.

-----

OtihOrih is produced with the support of the Kientzy Foundation & NOVA MUSICA STUDIO

Hindol’s musical journey started when he was all of five when his father Sri. Panchanan Sardar made him hold his instrument and taught him the initial lessons of the most beautiful language. Since then, he constantly tries to express through his music his experience and realization.

After blossoming under his father’s tutelage in the Rampur-Maihar school of music, known for its elaborate Dhrupad Alap of the Beenkars, Hindol came under the guidance of Sri Gaurav Mazumdar. He came to realize the importance of plurality in Indian Classical music. Lately he was being trained under the guidance of Lt.Pt. Deepak Choudhury.

His style has gradually evolved to a personal approach of the tradition and a deep spiritual touch. His esthetical understanding gives him a very personal sound, and his pallet of colors is balanced with technicality as well as sobriety.

Hindol has been pursuing his dream intensely and is on his way to establish himself as one of the talented upcoming artists of the younger generation of performing musicians through Radio, Television and several stage performances. Apart from being a performer, he is also a dedicated teacher and conducts workshops of Hindustani music and Indian Classical music appreciation in India and abroad.

Recently he was invited by the French government with a scholarship to work with musicians to experiment with different genres of music like Jazz, Blues, electronic music etc., along with Indian classical and give performances. He was also invited by the Swedish government as the representative of India along with the musicians from fourteen different countries to teach and play each others music along with the Swedish musicians and perform at ETHNO festival. He also toured Belgium and Greece to take part in the concert festivals. Apart from that he has composed and played his music for various plays and ballets.
Hindol has graduated from the Prayag Sangeet Samiti under Allahabad University with a gold medal and is a recipient of the Sahitya Kala Parishad’s scholarship and the National scholarship for Hindustani Classical Music in Sitar.
Leopold von Verschuer

Alvaro García de Zúñiga and Leopold von Verschuer first met in Lisbon in 1997. Leopold was on tour with a Valère Novarina's play, "La chair de l'Homme", a play that Leopold had translated into German. In fact, it was Valère's translator into Portuguese, Dóris Graça Dias, that presented them to each other. Doris was also to translate a couple of Alvaro's plays : "Le Théâtre n'est que du Cinéma" and "Théâtre Impossible".

"Théâtre Impossible" was comissioned by Prof. Yvette Centeno for the Gulbenkian Foundation in 1998. It was written for Leopold and to be played as a solo ponctuated here and there by a voice off, Alínea B. Issilva.

This play opened in Lisbon in November 1998 and a few years, latter, in 2002 and 2003, Leopold, within his independent theater company named Théâtre Impossible produced a tour of the play in several German cities and in Austria.

This tour brought the attention of Markus Heuger, from the Studio Akustische Kunst of WDR 3 to Alvaro's and Leopold joint work. They were therefore invited to propose a project for the SAK. A few years before, in 2000, Alvaro had participated in a contemporary art bienale with a "manual" that Leopold had seen in Lisbon. And the idea of transforming this "manual" into a Hörspiel was born. Manual became Manuel - half man, half handbook, a radio trilogy that was first broadcasted in 2003 & 2004. Leopold played the main character and was also the translater of the play into German.

Broadcasted in 2003 & 2004 Manuel's trilogy was considered "a remarkable achievement in recent radio art (Markus Heuger).

Live presentations of the radioplay in Lisbon (Goethe Institut, 2005) and Berlin (Theater Discounter, 2006) were performed mixing live acting and improvisation with excerpts of Manuel.

In 2007, Alvaro García de Zúñiga was invited to participate in the "Woche des Hörspiels" organised by the Berlin Academy of Arts. Naturaly Leopold joined us in the performative presentation of Pièce à Conviction / Corpus Delicti.

In 2008, the Zurich theatre am Neumarkt comissioned and produced Alvaro's play radiOthello, a play that Leopold translated into German and played Iago.

In 2009, Leopold participated in 4 performances of Alvaro's plays in the Maison de la Poésie in Paris : 3 versions of Manuel on Stage, Manuel's new form, and a few Logues with Alínea B. Issilva.

<center>Manuel on Stage</center>

Manuel began as a an Art piece: its was the handbook that Alvaro García de Zúñiga imagined for the book-work-of-art “A Finger for a Nose” presented in 2000 in the first, and only, Oeiras’ (near Lisbon) “biennale” of contemporary art, by Entertainment Co., a Portuguese duo of artists : João Louro and João Tabarra. Alvaro was participating for the first time in a joint work with these two artists that was also the last they did together.

A couple of years latter Alvaro was invited to transform this handbook into an acoustic play, by the Studio Akustische Kunst of the WDR, in Köln. Thus Manuel became half-man half-handbook, a radio trilogy played by Leopold von Verschuer and Alínea B. Issilva, among many others, and broadcasted in 2003 & 2004.
Performative presentations of the play, in 2005, 2006 & 2007 derived into a new transdisciplinary form involving a variable number of interpreters coming from different artistic and national backgrounds and including the use of different media.

This route brought Manuel definitely on stage as a performative play, or should we say format? In fact Manuel, like any handbook is a structure that can be adapted to many uses. It is always multilingual and there is always the attempt to translate something into something else. Perception is therefore a crucial issue for Manuel in his constant effort to “understand life though books and books through life, as well as books through books, and life through life…” Then he tries to fix something: meanings? Sounds? Signs? Is every language equivalent? In his quest, Manuel invents for himself a series of biographies and becomes the astronaut of his acoustic universe.

Manuel has now two modus operandi : the performance Manuel on Stage – Lasuite & the workshops MMIX 2010. MMIX 2010 supposes that we spend some tome in some place thus allowing us to evolve taking into consideration local specificities.

"Alvaro de Zúñiga is a musician. Or it was originally, before transferring the score in the floor. He studied violin with Sergio Prieto and Norbert Brainin. Now it has abandoned the ropes and rubbed his bow on words. And on languages, the possibilities of various languages. Because there are several languages at Alvaro de Zúñiga. It is currently seeking the French language. " - see the original text in French

"... texts Álvaro are landscapes, in the sense that the playwright Michel Vinaver makes a distinction between the texts machines (which are the workings of a story, with action and outcome) and texts landscapes (which offer a exploration of a state, a situation, a language). Reaching the scene, the texts of the Álvaro contaminate the actor becomes actueur, words are his target or his weapon, since everything is in double-edged sword in that universe. As humor, pervasive, and the jubilation of the language are another setback for a certain despair conveyed by the absurd. " see the original text in French

Alvaro García de Zúñiga is a Don Quixote of languages, also those of cinema and theatre. The first piece that I read was called Theatre Impossible. There was no character or action. When I pointed out a few mistakes french, not only did it not at all worried, but every question confused by my side he added immediately. "If so many people around the world speaking languages that they do not there is no reason why it is not possible to the theater." Alvarisation took its course. see the original text in German

"Alvaro is no drama, no literature, no film or music or art: it is simply the Alvaro. This applies also for its approach to the main raw material with which it works: language. His favourite is undoubtedly the French because he feels strongly abroad. And he likes strange that he would give his vote to give voice. He also enjoys the "I "With which he plays constantly as can be seen for example through the dedication he made himself part of the" Manual ":" to myself, because the only time we talked about my talent was abducted on ta, only said it was slow. "see the original text in French

I could not hear bent on his violin, but what I have seen him in theatre and cinema, makes me his reflection in the mirror wrapped in an aura of eccentricity, which alone can enable a singular talent. Seeing the excellent documentary he has just carried out on the Hall of Battles Palace Fronteira, I understood that the consistency of its knowledge and its sensitivity, without betraying the playful phrasing that grows so well, is a dominant feature of his portrait. Tender, beautiful, rare. -see the original text in Portuguese

on radiOthello

A superlative is provided in this staging: It's' Othello 'most strange that we have ever seen in Zurich. And it must be that this happens when a man of theatre and cinema from Uruguay (national language: Spanish), living in Lisbon (national language: Portuguese), having studied the violin in Cologne and philosophy in Paris and writing coins french achieves a classic English for a room in Switzerland. Alvaro García de Zúñiga did not simply mounted the timeless with current means. But he wrote a new piece around the old Shakespeare: "RadiOtello" - a pass to peak for the troupe and international amateur experience of the scene Zurich.

on Press Conference

The play Alvaro García de Zúñiga is on this elevator music of politics, on that fatal for the trickery of speech covers so often. The author identifies a number of these incisive series of words in situations innofensives and apparently joviales, as in the case of commédiens talking about the atmosphere of the film they are promoting, and reveal how doe, despite celebrity ahead, was available at all on the plateau and even warm. Such discour wins to be amplifé ad nauseam, to be offset by exhaustion, but Zúñiga has other targets to shoot down and the play is gaining momentum in the pseudo-frame geopolitical grotesque that follows. The objective, however, is the same: forms of public persuasion, énnoncées endless reveal, in expressing Lautréamont, "a huge amount of importance nule." Whether all this is done with a wonderful comic verve leaves us in the particular situation of wanting to hear more of what so often we do not want to listen. "Theaterzwang" begins with verbal acrobatics
A man asks questions - question. While s'imaginant issues concretely. If that step one, can be seen hopping. (...) "OmU" [oas-t. "] - As original with subtitles. O is played on the stage, U happening in bright letters in the upper right under the ceiling. U comments and criticism which is played down in O. Many of these comic hundred minutes of verbal acrobatics fabulously intelligent develops from the tension that is created between the text and bright actor in flesh and bones. (Westfälische Rundschau, 22 April 2002)

Torture fun: staging purification

In the best moments of Dada this meta-monologue, however, clarified by gestures, we believe hear Heidegger in costume Schwitters to Kanak criticism of Wittgenstein. (…) This irony staging tries to draw as Münchhausen by his own hair of the existential bourbe where she lets herself voluptuously réengloutir a moment later. It is a delicious agony, but the ordeal is part of any genuine purification. (Berliner Zeitung, 12 April 2002)

on The Theatre is just Cinema

The Theatre is what humans want to destroy

"It is the return of Alvaro de Zúñiga, the author of Impossible Theatre, which for more than an hour, flooding the room with an irresistible humor. Prejudices theatre, its references, artistic pretensions and "serious" theatre, everything is jeopardized, deconstructed, turned upside down "(Público, 19 March 1999)

The follies and dylemnes attacking players

"The actors are bad and what is on stage is of no importance. The theatre is a "pie" and just a good love story to captivate the public. The public is conquered and embark in this delirious comedy that turns into a film. "(Jornal de Notícias, 19 March 1999)

A surprise called Theatre

"Imagine if someone decides to take the word" Theatre "and to join anything that can join this concept; pairs more spontaneous the foolish. The result is an unbelievable result of puns ranging from the amusing terribly intelligent. (...) Apart from puns "The Theatre is the Cinema" is also pure enjoyment in the realization stage. With a pace very fast game which uses several media to diversify as much as possible what's happening on stage: video, images recorded live and projected on the big screen, through a wall in which the actors stick, literally , Remaining suspended in corégraphiques positions. "(Correio da Manhã.
